Do We Have Too Much Stuff?  7,215+ teen visitors, 435 survey responders, 160+ teen essays about mass consumerism

Teen Shopping Habits & Mass Consumerism...

Teens and Mass ConsumerismIn America, the Thanksgiving holiday helps us remember the big and little things for which we should be thankful.  No presents or purchasing are required.  Just family, friends, food and for many of us...football.

However, the day after Thanksgiving is a completely different story.

Black Friday.

A consumer-driven "holiday" that excites the American shopper and pumps us up to rush out and purchase holiday gifts.  For many, Black Friday shopping is an added tradition filled with coupons, family fun, and spending for loved ones.  It has become a cherished, add-on tradition to Thanksgiving...and spending a little money for others makes us feel good.

For others, however, Black Friday represents a darker side that exposes America's addiction to...stuff.

We wanted to know how teens felt regarding "mass consumerism"

We asked students to consider these questions...
1) Do you think we have too much stuff?
2) Is consumerism out of control?
3) Do you have positive family traditions to share about Black Friday?

We then asked teens to watch these videos before submitting a personal essay answering the question, "Do we have too much stuff?"

PART II:  CONSUMERISM ESSAY THEMES

After taking the survey, students submitted their writing contest essays to StageofLife.com.  From the 160+ qualifying teen essay submissions, several themes emerged:

Themes and Trends from the Essays:  "Do We Have Too Much Stuff?"
  • Student essay themes about mass consumerismAmericans are Greedy: Teens overwhelmingly agreed that Americans own too much stuff. This overabundance of stuff is a direct result of consumerism, the cyclical nature of advertising, and greed. Americans care too much about having the new hot “thing”, and will sometimes stop at nothing to get it (especially on Black Friday).
  • The Real Meaning of the Holidays: Many teens conjectured that Americans buy stuff to fill a void: to make themselves happy. But happiness can only be found in non-tangible “stuff”, like friendship, love, and laughter. Americans should focus more on the real meaning of holidays—spending time with your family—and less on the best deals on Black Friday.
  • Recycle, Recycle, Recycle:  Of course, quite a few teens admitted to buying a lot of stuff. If you are a consumer of stuff, it’s important to be responsible about your intake, and avoid hoarding old stuff. If you buy a new phone, for example, make sure to recycle the old phone or donate it to a charity or an organization like Goodwill.
  • Be Responsible:  In the same vein, spending a lot of money on stuff doesn’t mean that you are inherently wasteful or greedy. However, it is important to keep your need for stuff in perspective: shopping with friends and family can be fun and can create lasting memories, but the need for stuff should never overshadow the important people in your life.
