Tips for Avoiding the Flu - StageofLife.comTen Tips for Avoiding the Flu

by Kristen Cornelis, Health & Wellness Feature Blogger

Avoid the season’s flu in advance by following these Top 10 tips on keeping your body’s immune system healthy...

1. Constantly wash your hands.

Since germs accumulate on multiple surfaces, it’s important to wash your hands frequently throughout the day. This doesn’t mean you need to scrub them with a brillo pad, but stray away from soap bars for the time being. Liquid soap is a better alternative.

2. When you work out at the gym, wipe off the machines.

As long as your feeling 100% healthy, going to the gym can still be done. Just make sure you carry a small towel with you to wipe off any machines or equipment you use. The people before you may have forgotten to do so.

3. Stray away from touching your face.

Since germs (especially the cold virus) have the ability to enter your body through your eyes, nose, and mouth, it is important to avoid touching your face. If you touch surfaces that are contaminated with germs and then touch your face, it will be easier for those germs to get you sick.

4. Use a tissue to open public doors.

Unfortunately, many people use the bathroom and forget to wash their hands. After they leave, they continue touching many doorknobs and surfaces. By using a tissue or your sleeve to open the door, you’re successfully avoiding those germs. Do your best to avoid public restrooms as well.

5. Carry hand sanitizer with you.

You don’t need to latch it to your belt, but make sure you have it handy just in case there are no bathrooms around. Hand sanitizer is the best way to kill bacteria but it doesn’t kill 100% of those germs, so make sure you are still washing your hands.

6. Go to bed a little earlier than you normally would.

Your body is like a phone in a way, it needs to be charged. Sleep is your body’s charger and by giving yourself an extra few hours to sleep, your body is able to reboot itself. Waking up in the morning, you’ll have more energy and a better mindset throughout the day.

7. Look into immunity booster vitamins and supplements.

Many places sell vitamins that focus on improving your immune system. This can help your body become stronger in advance – to rid itself from the flu well before you show signs of having it.

8. Avoid large groups or gatherings.

When more people hang around one another, they are more than likely to share any sick symptoms they have. Who’s to say your out with friends and someone isn’t feeling well but doesn’t tell you. By avoiding these groups for a short time, while the flu is going around, will possibly save you from getting it too.

9. Make sure you’re hydrated.

Whether you are drinking orange juice, tea, or water, make sure your body is always hydrated. This will make it easier for you to fight off symptoms while keeping your immune system strong at the same time.

10. Take an extra break.

Sometimes sicknesses occur faster when stress is involved. In this case, the body becomes exhausted and cannot defend itself from invasive germs. By taking an extra break during a flu outbreak, it will help to relieve stress and let the body take a moment to strengthen itself back up.
