The secret of happiness: not to define happiness.

Oftentimes optimists are known for being happy. I however associate optimism with disappointment. Realists on the other hand, are often pleasantly surprised when things go their way. I think those two approaches to expectations in life also correlate to our expectations on our happiness. We cannot go through life expecting to always be a constant sort of happiness that is unattainable, and therefore unrealistic. However if we take the point of view that happiness may or may not happen, we will appreciate it more when we do get to feel it. The secret of our happiness is not to define it.
Happiness to me means a time of complete bliss, a time separate from the worries of the world. Warm cloudy days are an especially happy time for me. They are both warm enough not to have to wear a jacket, and dark enough not to require sunscreen. I do not expect them to happen every day, and do not get upset when they do not. Instead, when they do magically appear, I tilt my head back, hair flowing, and non-greasy/breathing skin up to the sky. I do not get to do this often, which is what makes those days very special. I never slave away checking the weather channel, expecting them to happen soon. I let these happy warm days happen when they happen, lifting me up from my previous troubles and preparing me for the next ones.
Next time you’re stressing, or chasing after the next thing to make you happy, stop for a minute. Enjoy the spoils of your time while they’re still there. Chase you’re dreams, but don’t require them to make you happy. Worries about what will make you happy can lead to unhappiness in and of itself. Take joy instead in the little things that make you happy, even if you didn’t expect them. Defining happiness sometimes makes it hard to see it when it’s there, don’t miss it.
