"There has been a bombing -"
"Breaking news! A fatal shooting at - "
"This year marks the tenth anniversary of -"
The TV is switched off.

"See? The world is a scary place. That's why you don't talk to strangers. Or take their candy, except on Halloween of course."
I stay silent. Mother is scolding Little Sister, who ran outside without adult supervision.
"Yes Mommy."
"That's why you always look for Mommy and Daddy, okay? We're always here."
"Yes Mommy."

I stay silent.
But I believe differently. "There are others here. The school is here; the government is here."
"-No," my friend interjects. "The school? The government? When did they ever care? If the school really cared, they'd start preparing us with emergency drills; same thing with the government."

Yet it's simple logic, really. Parents keep us safe because we're (usually) blood-related. Family bonds are close bonds, so I trust my parents. The school and the government need us. Without us, there'd be no one to teach, no one to govern. Even if parents, or schools, or the government don't always have our best interests at heart, they still abide by a core principle: governance for safety.

"I trust our institutions to keep us safe."
"You're joking."

Perhaps I'm the only one who thinks so, but the truth is: the government was made to protect us; schools were made to teach us; parents were made to care for us. See the common denominator? Us. As long as "we" are in the picture, I trust them to keep me safe.
