Trust And Safety: Protection Starts With You

As citizens of the United States, every day we are tested—in our loyalty to the nation, our trust in the government, and our belief in our peers to keep us safe. Ever since the attacks on 9/11, the Oklahoma City Bombing, and numerous other terrorist attacks, we have become less trusting of our government and others. While this may be within reason, this doesn’t mean we cannot work toward a safer and more trusting future. It is not only the government’s responsibility to keep us safe but our own as well.

One cannot believe in the government’s ability to protect the citizens if one does not believe in one’s capability to protect one’s self. We have to remember the government is made up of people, just as a typical town or group in need of protection. There are people working to protect us, and the less we support them the less they will be able to protect us. If we allow the government to protect us with its new security measures in airports and we allow schools to implement new security we will be able to be more sure of them because they will be more able to protect us.

Everything begins with trust. If you place your confidence in someone to protect you and put yourself in their hands then they will be able to help you. You must give someone permission to protect you. Don’t blame the government; start with yourself.
