Second Chances: An Opportunity for All

I believe in second chances. And perhaps I am too optimistic, but everyone makes mistakes and no matter the scale of their faults they should be offered a chance to start anew. Outside of forgiving others, it is also important to give yourself a second chance from time to time.

My freshmen year I took my first AP class, human geography. In the week leading up to the test my school held study sessions. While the program was intended to help students prepare for the exam I found myself “studying” via games that didn’t truly help me learn the content. I also got caught up in spurs of drama amongst my friends. Even though I told myself I was studying, looking back it’s clear to see that I was not. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize this until I received my score, a two. But instead of giving up, I gave myself a second chance when I took AP world history the following year. Through discovering study techniques that actually worked for me I was able to pass with a five, a perfect score. Even though this was only involving exams I’m prepared to give myself a second chance wherever is necessary in the future.

Second chances can be small, like my experience or involve an entire lifestyle transformation. Milton Blayee or “General Butt Naked” was a leader in the Liberian Civil War whose crimes include human sacrifice, cannibalism, use of child soldiers, and participating in blood diamond trade. He now claims to be responsible for 20,000 deaths. These horrifying statistics could rank him among the most evil people in history. However in July of 1996 he claimed to have seen Christ who told him to “repent and live, or refuse and die.” He now is a devout Christian, serving as a president of an Evangelical Ministries organization and has a wife and four kids.

If this man, who was once capable of some of the most gruesome war crimes was able to restart his life than almost anybody is capable to do the same. In his case, the transformation was spiritual, but no matter the religion anybody can have a second chance at life. I hope that one day everyone will be able to receive a second chance, whether that be felons unable to vote or find a job, or someone earning GED who didn’t complete high school. It does not matter how big the mistake or repercussions of a decision a person made, rather the sincerity of their regret and/or drive to do better.
