Last season of Dancing with the Stars, I recall being curled up on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn thinking, "Why are these people stars?" What had they ever done to be so widely acknowledged as being special, important, better than everybody else? I elaborated on that chain of thought for hours, days, months. What had they ever done to deserve the credit of being a household name?
Maybe they were the leading role of a reality TV program, maybe they rocked YouTube, maybe they designed some nice clothes; but nothing they ever did really deserved the credit they get. In truth, there is a high chance that anybody's life could be interesting if it were filmed every day, then carefully edited. And, quite frankly, fashion taste isn't so uncommon. Those "stars" in Dancing with the Stars, while widely known and loved, aren't everyday stars. They don't make day-to-day sacrifices on behalf of you or I. They don't push to make ends meet. They don't shop exclusively at Goodwill because they can't afford better. They are pampered, and unable to related to a real person's life.
America's true stars, the unsung heroes, are the working class. The young man who aspires to be an architect; the old lady running the soup kitchen; the stoop-backed man tinkering on your furnace- they should be acknowledged as the stars they are. They should be acknowledged for what they are, what they've done, and what they're doing.
Every day, thousands of people toil away in thankless work. Scrubbing toilets, feeding livestock, hunching over endless stacks of paperwork- those people are the ones that should be seen as stars, as heroes.
