Identity: From Straight to Super Straight

I was raised like many other people across the United States of America. My family is the average American family with maybe a few too many problems and always tries to attend church when possible. Of course, everyone in my family grew up straight and I felt like I was. Many of the other kids at school were constantly holding hands in middle school when in a relationship and by junior high and high school, some would share a secret kiss or maybe a little bit more. But as soon as I hit junior high, something changed.
Junior high is the time to start dating for most people. Kids sometimes experimented and end up wishing they could take things back. Fights always broke out about who was going to date who and rumors were constantly spread to make others look bad. It even traveled with us to high school. I watched people date and break up dramatically. Kids walked up and down the halls crying and screaming about their break up. Every single kid wanted to be in a relationship with someone.

‘I do not want to be in a relationship,’ I would think. ‘What’s wrong with me?’

Friends would comfort me and say that maybe I was not ready. The feelings never came and by the middle of 9th grade year, I wondered if I had a mental illness. Late one night, I grew tired of myself. I typed in these exact words into Google, “No sexual or romantic attraction to people.” The first thing that popped up answered my question. It was asexuality. I thought I was an idiot. Of course I had heard of asexuality other than in science but it was not enough for me to remember. I continued to research it and learned about how there was romantic and sexual attractions and found my true sexual orientation.
I know realize that there is nothing wrong with me. School helped me find my true self, which is an aromantic asexual human being. Asexuality is a new thing today and people still do not understand it. Since they do not understand it, they do not accept it. But being asexual is me and I will always be the same.
