Identity: Am I just a label?
Some say that high school is the absolute greatest time of ones young life. On many occasions I would beg to differ with such a statement. I’m not the super buff football catching athlete who is at the peak of the “social” food chain,  in fact I have never been too great with people. I am Manuel the son of two puerto rican immigrants and all my life I have been an avid comic book lover and action figure collector, preferring fictional stories over a homecoming dance. To me my hobby is extremely enjoyable but to others that put labels on people they think otherwise. Terms such as nerd, geek, and “the forty year old virgin” jokes are mostly what comes to mind when I begin talking about my hobby. So what am I supposed to be in this socially dominated world? Am I just supposed to be the “nerd” of the school that does what normal “nerds” do? Am I supposed to follow “the guided label?”
Ever since I have entered high school I have felt that there was a social code that everyone needed to run by, that everyone goes into a selective group by outward appearances and “social status.” The athletic jocks in one group, popular social healthy people in another, etc. Because of my supposed label I have unfortunately been the target of quite a bit of bullying so far in my now 3 years of high school. I have my friends but unfortunately because of mixed up schedules, clubs, and sports I don’t get to see them very often. So usually the things I do most of the time other than homework is play on the internet, watch wwe wrestling matches on tv, and read the comic books that I have collected.
I know that I’m not a label as what other people think. I am my own person that does and thinks what he wants not what other people tell me do. As I have found out in high school it is hard to see where one fits in at times feel like a label or an image rather than an actual person. But you are who you are on the inside no matter what outward appearances and vague descriptions may say. So this in saying this, I am Manuel. I am an avid comic book and toy collector who is a proud puerto rican, nothing more and nothing less.
