I learned from my mother that she brought the “Adopt a Grandparent” program to her high school

My mother grew up in Queens New York for her whole childhood. As a high school student she attended her town high school with great pride. She was always passionate and respectful of her elders. She was so passionate about serving the elderly that she introduced a program to her school called the Adopt a Grandparent program. This is when you visit a nursing home and spend the day with a person living at that home. This is to give those residents something to look forward to each week, and when their family is unable to visit, my mom was there to keep them company and make them feel more comfortable away from home.
She did this program with only one other person Steve, which shows her great determination and drive to serve her community. She gave herself to her elders while knowing the only reward is that of personal pride and happiness. Though very few noticed her efforts to the elderly, the governor did happen to notice. At her graduation she and Steve were given a medal as a congratulations and thank you for their unparallel service to their community.
I am extremely proud of my mother for giving so much of herself to help those that truly deserve it. Today she has to care for her grandmother who is currently in a nursing home in Florida. Even though it is a hassle and expensive, she tries very hard to go to see her as much as possible. She will miss events, work, and her children to go see her grandmother.
This story has taught me that you must always leave time for your family, and those less fortunate, and that includes your elders and grandparents. With my mom as my guide, I know that she will lead me to become a better person and show me the way to better serve my community and make the lives of those around me better in any way possible.
