Patriotism- Inalienable Patriotism

As we approach our Nations birthday, we wait anxiously for the opportunity to celebrate with fireworks and potlucks. What however, are we really celebrating? Is it the birth of a nation, or is it the opportunity to show our patriotism one day out of the year? And what exactly is a patriot? The answer to me is quite obvious and easy to see. We are celebrating an idea so great, it eludes even the most educated. We are celebrating Freedom.
To love this country is to love one’s Freedom. To, on a daily basis, demonstrate one’s ‘Inalienable Rights’ guaranteed to him or her in their everyday lives. Speaking freely and having the ability to disagree but maintain healthy dialogue and relationships. To speak up when one knows something is wrong, and be protected by a right that was used as a cornerstone in building this nation. To assert ones right to their freedoms even when it is not popular to do so, and still be protected. To love one’s country is simply to maximize ones efforts in making sure the rights they are guaranteed are put into action.
The thing that makes me proud of our country is that no matter where you are at any given moment in time, somewhere there is a person or group using their protected rights to peacefully get their point across. Whether agreeing or disagreeing, they are making their stand. From topics such as gay marriage or gun rights, this nation has patriots at both ends of these spectrums who choose not to be silenced, but to be active in using their rights to gather, bear arms, marry, or vote. It is the ultimate demonstration of respect to those who have given their lives in order for freedom to steadfastly continue in this land.
Being a good patriot is not just knowing you have rights men have died for, it is making use of those rights everyday of your life. Whether or not those who have died in service preserving your rights would agree with your position, they would agree that you have an obligation to yourself to effectively use those rights regardless of a difference of opinion. Being a good patriot is simply being active in the usage of your rights as an American. A patriot is not just someone willing to fight the fight against oppression, it is also a person who is willing to walk the walk while talking the talk of Freedom.
Disappointingly so, the ignoring of rights guaranteed to every American is largely becoming popular by our own government. That is what makes me least proud. Men have died protecting those rights, and whether our government agrees or disagrees with the positions of the citizenry, to ignore their rights and actively invade their rights to privacy is quite possibly the best example of what a patriot is not. To focus on groups or individuals based on irrational fears such as race or religion is a blasphemy of guaranteed freedoms.
