The Only One Crying Here

My favorite (and, at the time, least favorite) pregnancy moment was finding out I was pregnant.

I drank a literal bowl of alcohol the night before at a tiki restaurant (Trader Vic's) for my husband's grandmother's 90th birthday.

He asked me that night if I had taken my pregnancy test yet, and I slurred, "I'll take it in da morning, iz probly fine!"

So I took it in the morning, and it was not fine. I stared down at two pink lines while crouched, naked, over my in-laws' toilet (backstory: I was naked, because I was going to take a shower. Then, I thought, "Well, I'm pregnant, so I probably shouldn't shower," started to put my clothes back on, but then decided that even though I was apparently pregnant, I should go about my business as normal people do and shower). I decided that I couldn't wait until I had to pee again to take the second test. I ripped open the plastic, took out the second test, and swirled it around in my additional urine in the toilet, as if it were a cocktail, and I was a sexy lady at the bar, playing with her olive-enclaved toothpick. The second test came out positive as well (although the line was fainter).

I debated what to do for two minutes. Did I wake up my husband immediately and tell him? Do I wrap up the pregnancy tests in some adorable chevron-printed wrapping paper, along with a cigar and a note that says, "You're gonna be a Daddy, congrats, start looking for a job that pays more!"? I mean, obviously I would wrap up the cigar separately from the pee sticks...

Not one to sit around and debate whether to take action or start a new craft project, I went to my husband's childhood bedroom, decked out in all of its Jurassic Park glory, and punched him in the leg. He sat up.

"What? What's wrong?"
"I'm pr-pregnannnnntttt!"
"What's wrong with you? This is great! You're the only one crying here!"

He was right. I was the only one crying here.

Our daughter, Margot Poppy Jones, due July 21, 2015, was not expected, but she was wanted from the moment I announced her impending entrance into the world. She's already the best thing that's ever happened to us. And how can you not respect a woman that shows up when she damn well pleases?
