Teens and Poetry

Poetry Writing ContestAs part of April’s National Poetry Writing Month, we asked teens and college students to write a poem in dedication to someone who matters in their life.  Students dedicated poems to their parents, strangers, friends, love interests, God and more.  Below you'll find a highlighted selection of these poems submitted to StageofLife.com

Statistically, during the month-long poetry contest, we saw the following traffic to StageofLife.com on the writing contest page:
  • 7,085 high school or college students visited the Poetry Writing Contest page
  • The following countries sent more than 100 unique visitors to the Poetry Writing Contest page:  United States, India, Philippines, Canada, and United Kingdom
  • The following US states sent more than 100 unique visitors to the Poetry Writing Contest page (in rank order):  CA, NY, PA, NJ, TX, FL, VA, IL, MA, OH, MI, WA, GA, NC, MD, TN
Aside from submitting a poem to the contest, the teens and college students (aged 14-19) also participated in our "poetry poll." From this data, we learned some interesting things about teens and poetry such as:
  • 46% of teens write poetry on a daily basis
  • 43% of teens said they have written a poem for their parents before, while only 22% have written a poem for a boyfriend/girlfriend
  • 60% of teens find writing poetry "freeing"

From the poetry submissions themselves, four trends emerged:

Themes/Trends

  1.          To My Love: These teens felt inspired and bettered by their loves, soul mates, and crushes. Some teens wondered where their feelings would lead them, whereas other teens knew they were dating “the one.”

    2.      To My Best Friend: A best friend is a counselor, a teacher, and a sibling (but not always by birth). Teens weren’t sure what they would do without their best friend by their side; they love and appreciate their BFF’s.

    3.      To My Mother: Teens were thankful that their mothers cared for and loved them. Moms prepared these teens for real life with their nurturing and beautiful hearts.

    4.      Thankful: No matter who these teens wrote a poem to, almost all teens were thankful for a certain person in their life. It didn’t matter if they barely knew the person (a stranger) or if they knew the person better than they knew themselves. These poems were thanks to those who deserved them the most.

The Poems:

Immediately below, you'll find featured links to the StageofLife.com winning poem, our semi-finalists and over 100 other poems from college students and teenagers.

Please take a few moments to read a poem or two. If you have the time, make a comment on the responses you enjoyed the most.  We know the student writers will love hearing your positive input (they'll get an email notifying them if you comment on their contest entry).
