My Thoughts on Newton: Mending of the Broken

How is it that only after tragedies do we step back and really put

things into perspective? Although upsetting that that’s what it takes to put

our hearts and minds into the right place, some of us are unable to see

even then what is wrong with this picture of reality. We are temporarily

effected by these acts, only to return to our faulty ways.

Some may ask, what could drive one to shoot up a school of small,

innocent children? The answer lies only in the mind of the one with the

capability. As a society, we feasibly look at these people with disgust writing

them off as “crazy” or “insane”. But do we know of the chemical imbalances

in his brain? Although there is nothing, in my opinion, to justify such an act;

as a society we must take a large step back and see what the real issue

here is. Instead of treating problems and allowing people to be open about

their hardships, thoughts, and feelings, we medicate them. We, as a human

race, deny those with any kind of illness (mental or physical, if not both) the

gratification of opening up about what they’re going through. Instead we

live in fear, becoming dependent on drugs to numb us of all feeling. We use

these things to appear normal, but do we really have it in us? If this entire

country (of which is largely medicated) had their medications taken for even

one day, would we be able to survive? As a nation that strives for instant

gratification we find ourselves always using a quick fix, rather than

addressing the issue in the right way. Society as a whole, myself included,

needs to become educated on how to face and even dare to discuss our

problems with others, to bring them to light rather them hiding them in the

In the matter of gun control, what all of us forget is that as citizens it is

a right to protect ourselves, not a privilege. If we allow this corrupt

government system to glorify this man into the person who took away our

second amendment right, anarchy will erupt. A majority of our nation

supports this idea to repeal this right from us because they are afraid. They

watch the news and allow themselves to correlate guns with mass

shootings and killing of the innocent. Our founding fathers did not allow us

this right to bear arms with that intention. They knew what this world would

become capable of, and that we should be allowed to protect ourselves if

ever trespassed upon. Guns have saved billions of lives. A gun is only a

weapon of destruction in the hands of a destroyer. Just like a car is only a

weapon if operated by a reckless or inebriated driver. Never forget the

words of one of the world’s most notorious tyrants, “ To conquer a nation,

first disarm its citizens.” -Adolf Hitler
