I had just gotten home from school after a particularly hard day of insults and teasing about my body. All I wanted to do was curl up and a ball and die. I turned on my iPod and closed my eyes. There it was, the words I needed to hear, “God bless you if you are an ugly girl course too pretty is also your doom cause everyone harbors a secret for the prettiest girl in the room and God help you if you are a phoenix and you dare to rise up from the ash, a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy while you are just flying back. These words from Ani Difranco’s “32 Flavors” lifted my spirits because I knew the people at school were jealous of how beautiful I really was and that I had the strength and courage to be different. The next day at school I held my head high with a new found confidence that came from that small life changing song. Sometimes I still feel insecure about myself but I believe that comes from growing up. I now have a great group of friends and a loving family that I know will help me through anything.
