In the face of all the negative attention teens are getting it’s nice to see a positive statistic for a change, teen pregnancies are on the decline. This may come as quite a shock considering how popular teen parenting shows are on TV or the fact that in almost every popular TV show there is always that one couple who have sex before marriage. The secret to this decline though may actually be a series of secrets. The first off is the better education most teens are receiving. Many schools require a health class to graduate and no matter how hard students try to zone out it’s pretty impossible to miss the constantly repeated phrases. Phrases such as “Abstinence is 100% effective!”, “Use a Condom!” or the way too detailed lecture on vaginal rings, (if one is really unlucky there might even be pictures or worse, a video.) The ease of access to these contraceptives and the fact that teens are finally using their common sense and using these may not be the only reason teen babies on the decline. Other than acne another common sign of being a teenager is the desire for lack of responsibility. This isn’t to say that teenagers are irresponsible, it’s just that given the choice why would they want to have another human to look out for when they are so busy in their own drama and hormone filled lives. Teens are starting to see that while having a baby is a miracle it is one that is better saved for a time in life when they aren’t worried about their next math exam. These two factors combined could be a major reason for the decrease. While it is a long shot to believe that teens are not only using common sense but using it about sex, the older generation should be proud. Teenagers will always mess up and will always be the target of older generations ridicule. However this generation of teens, while they are messing up, is finding ways to not mess up as much, a fact that truly shows the growth of humanity.
