Teen Pregnancy Prevention: Sports and College > Baby
Teen pregnancies have reached an all-time low in the United States. I believe that the easily accessible contraceptives, more sex education in school, and real life experience with a teen mom have attributed to the decline in teen pregnancies.
Organizations such as Planned Parenthood have achieved a healthy balance of providing and education. This program does not promote teenagers to be sexually active; they simply provide the necessary precautions to those who chose to be active. Without the ease and confidentiality of Planned Parenthood, most teens would have unprotected sex and not only could get pregnant, but could spread STD’s. Many teens are too embarrassed to confront their parents about sex, and therefore do not have access to protection such as condoms, birth control, or morning after pills. These groups that help teenagers have prevented a lot of unwanted pregnancies. They not only provide for teens, but they are there to educate teens on the consequences of having a child at such a young age. Planned Parenthood not only prevents lives from being conceived, but it also saves lives. They give abortions at their clinics for teenagers who have realized their mistakes and cannot have a child or tell their parents. Most teenagers could die if they tried to give themselves an abortion because they had nowhere else to turn or if they chose to give birth to the baby without medical care. But at Planned Parenthood everything is confidential and safe. They even give follow-up examinations after your abortion.
Health class in school has offered a more in depth sex education. This serves to educate teens on not only using protection, but it also serves to scare most teens. Also by learning this at school it gives the teen an opportunity to share with their parents what they have learned. This creates an open dialogue between parent and child and forms a didactic atmosphere. Most parents are just as scared as the teens to talk about sex, but if the teen learns it in a strictly learning and preventive environment at school it makes the parents feel more comfortable to discussing sex with their teen. Teachers show the penalties that come with unprotected sex and pregnancy is not even one of the worst. In health class teachers use pictures and explanations of STD’s that scare most students. Even though this does not make all the teenagers abstinent, it has served its purpose for the use of condoms which also prevent pregnancies.
In my life I have seen about five teen pregnancies and all of them have been short of pleasant. I think this is one of the major factors in my life that have prevented me from having unprotected sex. A couple students at my high school have had to leave school because of their pregnancies. This has scared not only me, but many teenage girls at my school. They now either abstain from intercourse or use protection such as condoms or birth control. Another experience in my life was my two teenage cousins have children in high school. Both of their lives were dramatically changed and now in their twenties, they are going back to school to get the education that they never received because of their kids. I would never want to give up school or my future to have a child at such a young age and I think most teens think the same way.
