Teen Pregnancy Prevention: Learning Through Example
By: Kathryn Lella
Teen pregnancy has been declining significantly in recent years. There is no one explanation to why it has gone down and it is nowhere near a solved problem, but we aree getting there. I think one of the main factors in the decline of teen precnancy is the fact that for so long so many teens were getting pregnant. I think this is one of the principal reasons why teenage prancnacy has declined. After you see a friend go through that you want to do everything you can to help but you also want to make sure it doesn’t happen to you. Teen mothers are not bad people but they made bad decisions. Their lives were changed forever in one simple, irresponsible blunder. They have evreything taken from them in one fault. Their friends, education, and childhood all go out the window. As more teens became pregnant their friends started to comprehend how hard it was to be a teen parent. It wasn’t a pleasurable experience and it wasn’t a wise choice. It was tough and it made the rest of your life a great deal harder than it had to be. I am a freshman in high school. This year one of my very best friends had a baby at 16. This made me come to the realization that I would do everytghing I can to prevent this from happening to me and I learned this through example. My friend, Sally, was a strait A student and was involved in school. She had lots of friends and was not a person anyone would have exspected this to happen to, but it did. I know that Sally wouldn’t trade her daughter for anything in the world and she loves her more than anything, but seeing Sally go through this made me grasp something very important. I don’t want to be in that position. Sally misses a lot of school now and her life is very difficult. She can’t go out whenever she wants. She can’t be a ordinary teenager anymore because she has a child. This can happen to anyone at anytime and teens finally see that. It’s not an untalked about issue anymore. It is widely discussed and has affected nearly every teen in America in some way. Whetherthey are affected through friends, family, or individual experience. Teens are finaly getting smart and getting safe. It’s sad that it took this long for it to happen but it did at last. Teen precnancy has declined a great deal and we are on the right track. Teens just need to keep in mind that it could happen to you, you are not invincible. Learn from example and be smart. Consider the consequences of your actions before you act.
