In today’s society it seems as if not getting pregnant is what’s “in.” The percentage of teen girls getting pregnant is steadily decreasing. From the girls on MTV’s “16 and Pregnant,” it is not correctly portraying the decrease in teen pregnancies. What the show is doing is glorifying the poor decisions these girls had made. There are a lot of reasons why teen girl’s are deciding to wait until having a baby, such as, hard economic times, better sex education in schools, and the availability of clinics to seek for help.
The hard economic times make it harder to take care of your self nowadays, let alone a baby! So, teens understand that and restrain from getting pregnant. Another reason is that teens in school learn more in depth about how to prevent from contracting STD’s and preventing pregnancies from happening. They have the knowledge and use it to their benefit. Before some schools had very poor sex education or not even any at all. This meant if teens did not learn anything about safe sexual practices on their own then they were all alone. Another reason why teen pregnancy has gone down is because the availability of clinics, such as Planned Parenthood. They provide low or no cost treatment for STD’s, pregnancies, and even condoms. Another thing is… It is confidential! Since teens have the privacy to seek help they can reduce pregnancy.
Kids nowadays are becoming smarter so that means smarter decisions. People say kids grow up and mature too fast nowadays. Well, there is a good side to that because that means teens can make mature decisions! We just need the guidance and help sometimes. That is why teen pregnancies are not 100% gone. We have made a dramatic improvement over the years and the process will be ongoing. Although everyone is entitled to their own decision, everyone should help them make the right decision.
