The Decline of Pregnancies
Probably the most important attribute of human’s nature is reproduction. With a sex-driven society, reproduction can even happen on accident. However, the last decade, teen pregnancies have declined. This is not because of a decline of sexual activity, but because of the popularity of other sexual activity besides intercourse and contraceptives becoming overly accessible.
This generation, I believe there has been a major increase in sexual activity. Every song, movie, and book seems to be based around some time of sexual desire towards another. Media is repeatedly showing teens and adults that if you are attracted to the opposite sex, you should immediately become sexually active. Not only are they pushing the importance of heterosexual sexual activity, but homosexual activity. Although the majority of people are not homosexual, I strongly believe that the increase of homosexuality increases heterosexual’s desire to have sex. I say this because homosexuality seems to be more sex driven than heterosexuality. The more heterosexuals see beautiful and sexy lesbians as the media portrays them, I believe they are more likely to become sexually active with their heterosexual partner.
Although sexual activity has increased at my school, pregnancy rates have surprisingly decreased. One reason I believe this astonishing fact is true is because of the popularity of other sexual activity besides intercourse among my peers. The media has told them that performing oral sex, anal sex, “hand jobs”, and “fingering” will be culturally accepted, even if you have no emotional feelings for your partner. Sexual activity was meant to be between two of the opposite sex who have emotional feelings for each other, not only physical. The media has taught my friends completely misleading lies.
Another reason I believe that pregnancies have decreased in my school is because of the availability of birth control, condoms, and “day after” pills. More and more of my friends are getting on birth control because it is available to any girl with parents consent. A large majority are getting on them because of the decrease the amount of menstruation periods. Although they might have gotten on them because of the health benefits, the pill gives them the option to have safe sex. Condoms are also becoming increasingly popular. Movies and music have told all my guy friends it’s even cool just to have a condom in their wallets, even if you didn’t plan on using it. Condoms are even becoming more diverse with different flavors, fittings, lubricants, and even sensations.
Although there has been an increase of sexual activity in my school, pregnancy rates have decreased. This is because of the availability of contraceptives and the popularity of other sexual activity besides sexual intercourse. The best way for us to decline teen pregnancies in my community is to stress the importance of waiting until you are married before you have sex, not how to perform safe sex. This is because the only 100% safe sex you can partake in is abstinence.
