Love is just a four letter word, but with it comes such powerful emotions. Love can be the most magical and wonderful thing in the world or the darkest and tragic. There is no exact definition of love, it comes from the heart, and it varies from person-to-person based on personal experiences. I believe love is expressed in many ways—especially in the small acts people take time to do, such as holding a door or cooking a homemade dinner.
Love is essential. As human beings, we are built to want and need affection, whether it is from the support of a close-knit family, from a significant other, or from the admiration and affection received from a pet. Love also requires hard work; it is not something that just comes along and is meant to be easy once it happens. Both partners need to contribute to the relationship and make sacrifices for one another. Taking the fall to make a sacrifice for your significant other is a clear way for one to express how much they care for their partner.
Teenagers and love tend to receive a bad wrap from individuals that are older with more experience. The media feeds its input as well, stating teens are over their heads when it comes to being in love. Though, sometimes love between two young individuals is real. There are stories told that become favorites of how a young couple fell in love in high school and are now still happily married 50 years later. Teenagers need to be urged by these stories and not be discouraged from opening themselves up to one another. At this moment in their lives teenagers are at their prime, a time when power and vigor are greatest, and they feel with their emotions much more intensely. In their eyes they may feel as if they are in love when actually the emotions being experienced are just strongly escalated from the normal feel of “I care for you.” But it is important not to shatter the illusion young couples build because it is also a learning experience for them to step from, or it may truly grow into real love as time passes and they mature.
No matter what age, love brings a world of black and white to life with vibrant color. It is a precious thing that every person strives for, guiding lost and lonely souls to happiness. Love can be expressed in grand notions, but the small notions are just as important. Life is quite lonely and dull without the experience of love and affection. For one to truly live, it is essential they know love.
