If there's one thing I've learned about owning a home, it's that there's always something to be done to it... in it... around it...for it...
Before my husband and I bought our house, we lived in a small apartment. Ahh, the carefree days of the landlord having your garbage disposal replaced when it starts making that strange gargling noise. Having the building manager send out a plumber to fix a clogged tub. Telling the management company you need your carpets steam cleaned, since it has been a few years. Those were the 'good old days'.
Except for when your landlord said you couldn't paint your walls. Or when the manager left her clothes in the dryer all day so you couldn't finish your laundry. Or the time the management company took weeks to come fix a leak in your bathroom ceiling, which would fill your bathtub with gross water from the unit above yours.
Alright, so I guess sometimes I look back on living the apartment life with rose colored glasses. And don't get me wrong, I am EXTREMELY grateful to own a home. But still, I remember spending weekends sitting on the couch, just lounging around with nothing to do. Now when I lounge around on the couch, I see the weather stripping on the door starting to wear down. And I can’t help but notice that the small crack in the wall has gotten longer, with more branches. And then my mind wanders off to the guest room that I’ve only half finished… which of course is next to the office that I’ve only half finished. Hmm, I should go buy some pillows for that bed. And I could certainly use some framed artwork to put over the desk. Maybe I could print up some photos from our vacation, even though I’m low on ink… I’ll definitely have to patch up that wall before hanging anything. I wonder if I have any leftover paint and paintbrushes… What time does Home Depot close!?
Man, it’s always something.
