Finding happiness...Finding love...finding "the one"...this great quest is drummed into our collective heads from the time we are very young. The quest alone can kill you - or at least make you reevaluate your world on an almost daily basis. But, for purposes of today's diatribe, let's jump to the point where you've found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.
Congratulations! Mazel Tov! Feliz...well, my Spanish is a bit rusty.
So now you're married - or together or whatever your situation and state allows and sanctions - and you're living with each other. If this were a video game, the credits would roll, the music would play and your thumbs would finally unclench...except, there's a much harder "bonus round" to this game - a secret level that you didn't no about when you started to play.
Because here's the thing: Now that you live with this person whom you love...now that you are together forever...now...they are going to start to piss you off.
You heard me...you love him, you cherish her...and you're going to have to fight back the urge to smother them with a pillow in their sleep...okay, well, maybe not THAT, but you get the idea.
The funny part is, it all makes perfect sense. In fact, I don't trust couples who live together and claim they never fight. Makes me suspect they're pod people. Think about it - did you ever fight with your brother or sister? Your parents? Your college roommate? Anybody you've ever lived in close quarters with? Of course you did! Probably some major fights too! And unless you had a seriously "unique" relationship with those folks, you weren't sleeping with any of THOSE people!
"Hating" your significant other from time to time is just part of loving them. And, to quote Marie Barone on "Everybody Loves Raymond" when she was asked how "hate" could be a part of marriage..."you make room."
So, as long as they are balanced with happy, contented times, don't worry about those occasional moments of "get away from you idiot"...that's what love is all about!
