My name is Lindsey, and I also blog at iruninheels.typepad.com. Thanks for reading!
I had a tough situation at work last week, and after a couple conversations with my mom about it, she asked for the email of my boss.
"Why?" I asked suspiciously.
"There are some things she needs to know," she said in her best "I'm going to take of business" voice.
"Uhhhhh, I'm not comfortable with that," I responded (translation: I can handle this myself!")
But for a brief moment, I was nostalgic for the childhood days when my parents could fight my battles (or at least help me fight them).
We moved to Oklahoma from Utah when I was entering 4th grade. My mom called one of the other mothers and arranged for me to get together with her daughter in the summer so I'd know someone on the first day. Go mom! Did I mention I was extremely shy in elementary school? This was huge for me.
There is something so reassuring about having someone to go to bat for you. One of the struggles I've encountered as a single person with my immediate family spread across the country is the lack of someone to champion my cause. And yes, friends and relatives offer tremendous support and encouragement, but I think, ideally, one of the many roles a spouse plays is to be your built-in cheerleader, the one in your corner facing the world with you.
So, while on most days I'm content to slay the enemies of heavy grocery bags or cars that won't start on my own, there are moments when I look forward to the days of wedded bliss. Okay, okay I know there are plenty of far-from-blissful parts of marriage too, but a girl can dream, can't she?
