College life is about a lot of things. One of the most important is keeping yourself entertained between classes and class work, essays and thankless jobs, college drama and love affairs. And entertainment is especially important during the summer time, where students are scattered nationwide. If you are in the situation I am in, then this means not being near any of you college chums. Attending school eight hours away also means you have very few close friends left in your dear little hometown. (If you do, in fact, live in a 'dear little town' as I do... The village of Sandy Creek.)
So, number one way for an internet-savvy, semi-nerd like me to keep occupied? Stumble Upon. Seriously, this is one of my most favorite internet add-ons in the history of internet add-ons. It is a simple tool bar added to the top of your browser page, which allows you to travel the internet according to your interests. It takes the leg work out of web browsing.
Number two on my list is swimming. This is almost a given for summertime, but the spots in Northern Central New York are beautiful and numerous. I live by a few rivers, a pretty big pond, and Lake Ontario. There are several beaches and hiking locations withing twenty minutes of my house. Some of them I can walk to. For those without access to natural swim spots, pools are the only option. But Swimming is fun enough to deal with the people, even if you are crazy introvert who totally balks at the thought of new people.
If, like a few crazy people I know, you totally hate the water, the third things on my list is sitting somewhere with good lighting, a ceiling fan (or AC, if you are lucky), and a good book. I think that due to the fact that this is a blog site, the idea of reading for a few days and ignoring everything else would appeal to some people. In fact, I did precisely that for a few days already.
Finally, there are the other equally mundane, non-original options of watching television, going to the movies, etc...
If you want to do something fun and creative, my number one tip is to do it yourself. If you are on this site, reading this blog, I have no really great answers for you. Go for a stroll at night so you can feel cool, fresh air. Eat strawberries under a willow tree. Participate in one of your hobbies. Pick up a hobby. Kayak! Stop worrying about everything on this god-forsaken orb and stop looking to others to discover what you should be doing. Direct yourself! And if you find out something fun to do, do it. Stop caring if other people are doing it, or if it is what you should be doing. Do anything! (This is advice given on the grounds that you are not, in fact, a sociopath, or just itching to go on a good spree of bank robbing.)
