Oil Spill: Litter

After finishing my feast of a lunch, consisting of a PB&J sandwich and a Snickers bar, I was ready to head back into work. I collected my baggie and my candy wrapper and in the four feet to the trash can my wrapper had slipped from my fingers and tumbled under the park bench I’d been lounging on. I canned the baggie when a man walking by, who I guess had been watching me, smiled and said, “You’re not going to leave that under that bench now, are you?” It was pleasant but pointed. Of course I had the intention to grab my runway wrapper but he had no way of knowing this and aimed to keep me responsible of my litter. I applaud him and anyone who would do the same. We all see people litter even if “accidentally” and we should keep them accountable and vice versa. A polite reminder that a person has dropped something or that they seem to have missed the trash can is all it would take. Most people would be so caught off guard and embarrassed they would take care of their mess and move on quickly so as not to make a scene. It’s also pretty entertaining to see most people get that deer-in-the-headlights look and then scramble to fix their mistake. On another note, would it be such a pain to just pick up litter that we see on our way from point A to B? I think most of can spare a few seconds to pick up the empty paper cup we would usually step around on our way to class or work and just wash our hands when we get to point B (Something we could probably all do a bit more, anyway). That is not to say we should run about picking up every germ ridden hot dog wrapper we see in the street. While I like a clean environment, I don’t want to risk catching some virus which thrives within forgotten cigarette packs and left behind wrappers, let be sensible. I think we can all spare a few moments to help others control their litter and expect others to remind us to keep our own under control.
