Which type of student loan is best? Subsidized or Unsubsidized?

I just got the Financial Aid package from one of the schools I'm considering, and they offered both types of loans. But, what's the difference? Which is better?

Hey - that's a great question and the type of student loan you should get depends on your specific situation. I found some great info on this here at

Personally, I went with the subsidized loan as I didn't want to have to worry about interest payments during school. But that was just me.

Check out that link. Good luck!

Hey bfurl -

If you have options for both loans, the subsidized is the best plan for any student. If it is subsidized that means you do not have to pay interest on the loan while you are in school, and most give a 6 month "grace period" of payments once you have graduated to find a job and actually pay the loans back. Unsubsidized means that the interest will start to accumulate the day you take the loan out.

Good luck!
