For some months now, I have put off telling my hairdresser that I will not be going back to her. I have been going to her for three years now, following her from one salon to another, but the last two haircuts have not been as good as previous ones. I feel bad because I know she's hurting for business and she does not charge outrageous fees. But I think it's time to move on.

She has been calling me and leaving messages because I'm too chicken to pick up the phone. Any advice on how to break up with your hairdresser?

This is a tough one. There are two choices, I believe. 1) Tell her the truth. You have decided to "start seeing someone else". 2) Tell a white lie and say you have decided to cut back on such luxuries for monetary purposes. Hopefully, she'll eventually get the point and stop calling. Good luck!

I would go the chicken way and say something like "I need someone closer to my work/home." Or what The Ketchup Diaries suggested and say you've had to cut back recently. Try at all costs to blame it on someone/something else! :) But then again, I have issues with confrontation...

Sadly...I have no advice either. I am just as big chicken when it comes to that kind of thing. The last time I stopped going to a hairdresser it was because she was destroying my hair and I simply stopped going without explanation and ignored her texts and told a white lie about why I wasn't going anymore.
